My Summer Top 5's

June 19, 2017 by Marco De Leon

The summer is upon us and that means it's hot in Texas. At heart, I'm an introvert and for me that usually means I like a handful of things to do, many I've written about. Nevertheless, I thought I'd share my top 5's on things I like to do a little more during the summer months.

Hope you enjoy!

TOP 5 BOOKS

1. Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands by Paul David Tripp
I started this book a few weeks ago and it's been incredibly good for my soul. Really, anything by Paul Tripp is good for the soul. But this book particularly has been refreshing for me as it's been a pastoral resource in counseling but also in my own life. I would highly recommend it.

2. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
This was one of the first books I read when I became a Christian and the first I read from C.S. Lewis; his arguments and wisdom continually come to mind and it's rather nostalgic for me.

3. The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions
Prayer has always been an area of weakness for me and over the past several months, that has been incredibly convicting. These collection of prayers from the Puritans is amazing and a great help to me in my daily prayer life. I highly recommend it.

4. God's Word Alone--The Authority of Scripture: What the Reformers Taught and Why It Still Matters by Matthew Barrett
I'm 3 chapters in and I love this book because it's a rich culmination of early church history and the reformation. Additionally, we're about to do a 5 week sermon series on the 5 Solas so naturally this is a great resource for study.

5. Reset: Living a Grace-Paced Life in a Burnout Culture by David Murray
I have yet to start this one, but it's on my desk. I've been burnt out before, both as a bivocational ministry leader and have almost burnt out as a full-time pastor. This is definitely a must read for anyone in ministry.

Top 5 CIGARS

1. Flor de Las Antillas by My Father
This is a great quality stick, both in its performance and price. This is definitely a medium smoke, but lots of smoke. It has a hefty tobacco flavor with some added sweetness to it.

2. Prensado by Alec Bradley
This is one of my favorite sticks, a common go-to. It offers rich coffee and chocolate flavors; great breakfast stick (as in, a good smoke with coffee) or dessert stick.

3. All Out Kings by Drew Estate and Caldwell
This is the newest one in this list and was really looking forward to it when it came out. Thanks to my boys out at Cigar Saveur, they hooked it up! Definitely a great stick and hard to find in my experience. This is a medium strength cigar with a lot of rich flavor--earthy, black coffee, leather, and sweet tones throughout the smoke.

4. AFR-75 San Andreas Maduro by A. Flores
This one is a little harder to find, but when you do find it, it's hard to be disappointed. Don't let the maduro wrapper intimidate you as this is a mild-medium smoke. The flavors are a great blend of a natural tobacco sweetness, creamy, and very smooth with a long finish; it's definitely a smoke for anytime of the day.

5. Liga Privada T52 by Drew Estate
If you have some extra cash, then Liga Privada is a good "special occasion" cigar. I only get these when I'm out of town because they don't carry them in McAllen and they're a little expensive (anywhere between $13-16). Nevertheless, lots of smooth tobacco, creamy, and leather flavors; long burner.

If you choose any of these great sticks OR you have a few of your favorites, but are missing a good cutter. I suggest Cuban Crafter's Perfect cut. It'll be the only cutter you need.

Top 5 COLD BREW COFFEE

1. Chameleon Cold Brew Coffee
Chameleon Cold Brew is definitely a constant in our fridge. It's also distributed throughout most grocery stores in Texas so it's easily accessible. The original is my favorite; strong in its strength (it's concentrated) and rich in chocolate flavors.

2. Black and Blew Coffee by Cuvee
This is a delicious treat; it's sweet and creamy both in it's flavors and texture. A friend and I would love to have this on tap in our office because it's that delicious.

3. Grady's Cold Brew
Grady's is very creamy, much more creamy than Chameleon and I mean that in its flavor and texture which gives it a little "heavier" taste to it. The earthiness is very sweet and great for the early morning or after dinner.

4. Bear State Cold Brew Coffee
Sometimes, when you drink black coffee (hot or cold brew) it can taste quite bitter in its notes. Bear State has done a phenomenal job at making a cold brew that is very sweet from the start (but also pairs well with creamers or almond milks). Not bad, Cali. Not bad.

5. Bruja Cold Brew Coffee
This is a very easy drinking coffee--great on a hot day. If I'm not mistaken, it's a brazilian bean; smooth nuttiness flavors with a hint of sweet.

Review: Cigar Saveur (July 2016)

July 02, 2016 by Marco De Leon

Yesterday, I received my second package from Cigar Saveur's monthly cigars and I must say that this was something I was looking forward to all week! I love unboxing new products and since I love cigars you can imagine how excited I become. To give you a quick review on this month's cigar, I wish to point out two things:

• First, if you're new to the site or cigars in general, then I recommend you checking out my first unboxing review from Cigar Saveur HERE. This way, you can get caught up on what this all entails and why I enjoy these dudes.

• Second, I wish to point out their great branding. I think I briefly mention this in my first review, but I really want to make a big deal out of it. To me, branding and marketing will help decide whether I want your product or not; whether I should set foot in your boutique or not. And the team at Cigar Saveur do a professional job at presenting to you with great cigars.

In any case, below are the cigars that were delivered this month and then some quick thoughts:

Olivia Serie V Belicoso Tatuaje 10 Year AnniversaryFlores Y RodriguezGraycliff Meritage

I have smoked one of the four from this selection and that was the Olivia Serie V Belicoso and it's definitely one that stays in my humidor. I'm a fan of Oliva because they're consistent, great smoke out put, and perfect draws. I will say, though, that I'm very excited about the Tatuaje. Many have been recommending Tatuaje lately because of their great flavor and construction, but also because of the complexity.  I'm also looking forward to Flores Y Rodriguez because not only is it a limited edition cigar, it comes from PDR which are some of my favorite cigars. If you're unsure about giving Cigar Saveur a try, I'll give you two quick reasons as to why you should:

• If you're just starting out, then this is a good way to step into the cigar world because it allows you to try a variety of really good cigars from all over, you get to see what your pallate is like, and when you find a cigar (or cigars) that you enjoy then it can prompt you to (1) buy a box at your local shop or (2) shop for others with similar elements exposing you to more cigars. I also wrote a brief blog on cigar culture and what's in store. If you have the time, check it out HERE.

• You never know what you're going to get. Because of the diversity and variety that cigars bring, if you're one that tends to smoke the same sticks all the time (not that there's anything wrong with that!), this is an easy way to step out of your comfort zone to see what else is out there. Additionally, these are premium cigars so you're not being ripped off with cheap finds. In other words, these cigars were rolled with intention. And you love a good cigar, then you can appreciate the selection.

The Cigar Shop

July 01, 2016 by Marco De Leon

Over the last several months, I have been asked about my cigar smoking and why I enjoy it. It's been everything from special hashtags on social media to practical joking in conversation. I thought I'd write something short and concise to share my thoughts about cigars. And for the record, I know it may not be for everyone, but it's definitely one of my favorite hobbies.

Also, I wish to share that I don't smoke as often as many think I do. Many of the pictures I've posted have been cigars that I just received in the mail for review or that I've bought- in essence, smokes that I'll eventually get to. Nonetheless, I have been smoking for several years now and I have a passion for cigars. They're my jam. I don't like cigarettes, weed was never an interest, and I don't believe vaping is authentic (another conversation for another time).

The Experience

Cigar smoking brings several elements. We'll start with the overall experience. It's an art because each cigar has been constructed, rolled, and checked by hand which means they're made with intention. When you decide to toast (light) a cigar it's because you have time. It's not a quick smoke, it shouldn't be.

When you smoke a cigar you're forced to slow down and take hold of what's been going on. This is the part where you simply reflect on the day or week, enjoy a good read or engage in work while in a great atmosphere, or engage in fruitful conversation with friends. The bottom line is that you have time; something people are quick to forget about and are constantly searching for.

For a moment, the fast paced culture we're accustomed to doesn't exist.

The great philosopher, Ferris Bueller said it best in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986):

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it."

Is it Missional?

Remember, in part, this is about preference so if cigar smoking isn't your things I completely respect that. Where I want to encourage and exhort you is in asking what are you doing to engage your culture? Your city?

Cigar smoking is incredibly missional because, as mentioned before, time slows down for a moment and people who enjoy cigar smoking at a B&M ("Brick and Mortar" or lounge) appreciate conversation. The cigars are what brings them together and serves as neutral ground so it's one of the best places I have found to talk about Jesus and to share His gospel with those who don't know Him. In my experience, when sharing the gospel at our local cigar lounge, tolerance is replaced with sincere respect and handshakes.

I am well known at the cigar lounge that's in town and love talking with several of the men who visit frequently. The culture of cigar smoking is unique and not as popular as many think, but it is alive and well. It's authentic.

So, the next time you find yourself (if you ever do) with an hour or two to spare and the smell of rich tobacco is one that you enjoy, then I encourage you to stay in at your local shop and spend your time wisely, incline your ear, and turn the cell phone off.

Review: Cigar Saveur (June)

June 03, 2016 by Marco De Leon

Earlier this week I experienced my first box opening from Cigar Saveur. I must say, it was exciting! First, the packaging is incredible and I love the artwork. To me, it shows that these guys put a lot of thought and care into their presentation. This is a big deal because cigar smoking is an authentic experience that forces you to slow down and notice things you normally wouldn't when you're on the go. So, to begin, the box artwork is great, big thumbs up.

Essentially, Cigar Saveur hooks you up with four (4) premium cigars each month once you subscribe as a member of the community. These cigars are not only unique in their flavor and strength, but some of these sticks are limited edition cigars meaning that only a certain amount of these cigars are produced. In my opinion, this enhances the experience because you're getting something special. These guys scout the best tasting cigars and deliver them to your door. Additionally, once you get a taste of some of these and enjoy them then you can consider buying a box of your favorite sticks at your local cigar shop or lounge; works out great because it's amount community!

I love smoking cigars. As mentioned, they help you slow down and help you to enjoy your experience whether it's found in a good book or among friends. In any case, upon opening the box, the 4 cigars pictured above were originally vacuum sealed which is genius. This allows the cigars to retain their freshness and are ready to smoke or be stored in your humidor. Personally, I stored them in my humidor right away only so that they can get acclimated to the temperature here in south Texas. But if you're not in scorching heat and can enjoy a stick right out of the box, I would encourage you to do so!

The cigars come with an inventory list that gives you some fun facts about each cigar which is great if you're just getting into cigar smoking community (welcome!). Earlier, I smoked the Room 101 (shortest cigar in the bundle) and the draw was perfect (I prefer on the loose side) with plenty of smoke output, the flavor was sweet with plenty of spice, great tobacco aroma. Tomorrow, I'm trying out the Padron and I'm looking forward to it. Padron cigars are some of my favorite sticks (though I wish they'd double cap). But I digress.

If you're a cigar enthusiast and love trying out new experiences, then I recommend checking out Cigar Saveur. And before I forget, when you sign up, you're part of an on-line community where everyone shares their thoughts. I've given you some hints of mine from the Room 101, but if you want to know more then you'll have to sign up!
